The Center of Everything - August 2005

The Center of Everything by Laura Moriarty
Chosen by: Ryan
Location: Kerry's house in West St. Paul

We met at Kerry's house tonight, out on her pool patio. The reason we did it here was because since she is due soon, we wanted to give her a little shower and thought it might be easier for her not to have to haul the gifts back home. Oh, and did I mention she has a pool? Nice summer night, friends, wine, sitting by the pool just tops it off ;o) We did a group gift and since she knows she's having a girl (Ava?), it's pretty easy to shop. Ryan, myself, Jessica P, Christina, Kerry and Carolyn were there.

We talked about the book over appetizers. Randy was nice enough to grill kabobs for us. This is a coming of age novel about a 10 year old girl faced with several life challenges, including having a single mom on welfare, no dad, and a disabled little brother whose dad is also not around. It took us back to our childhoods as well and made us a bit anxious about our own children's adolescence to come. Parenting is such a challenging job, yet the most important and incredible thing I've personally every experience (and Norah's only 15 months old!)

It was a good night. After we ate, we drank wine and lemonade. Dessert was ice cream and cake. Kerry opened her gifts and we chatted until about 10 and said goodnight. The next time we meet there will be a new member.....Baby Appleton!
